Google has pulled the wrappers off the new Android photo editor that's sitting pretty on the new KitKat version of its mobile OS.

The freshly added feature is bound to impress camera obsessives. Not least because it offers the ability to apply special effects, retouch specific areas of snaps to get them looking sharp and create presets to tweak images to an exact standard.

Naturally, filters are also available, so you can get that retro feel without having to upload snaps via Instagram. More importantly from Google's point of view, though, is that it offers punters the option of bypassing Facebook’s photo service altogether.

The new photo editor forms part of the rethought Android gallery app in KitKat. You can take a look at it being used by Android staffer Nicholas Roard in the YouTube clip below.

Android KitKat is due for release on Nexus phones in the next few weeks, with Samsung and HTC also promising imminent updates for their flagship devices.
